We believe there’s a superhero in each of us. True Superheroes celebrates people who’ve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. Each week we nominate people in different fields. This week we focus on video games!
Shigeru Miyamoto
As a child he would make his own toys from wood and string, and play with them in mysterious caves near his home in Kyoto. As an adult he took those childhood experiences and created some of the most famous games - and characters - on Earth: Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda and more. For 40 years he’s been the creative force behind Nintendo, with a cultural impact that has been likened to Walt Disney, Steve Jobs and Stan Lee, but Miyamoto’s objectives have always been humble: he just wants to help people play.
As a budding film student Amy Hennig took a freelance job at Atari to pay her college fees and fell in love with video games. She dropped out of film school and became one of the most successful game producers in the short history of the famously male-dominated games industry. Now she’s working on new games for Lucasfilm and Marvel, weaving new superhero narratives while inspiring countless young female writers to follow in her wake.

As the CEO of Epic Games Tim Sweeney is best known as the man behind Fortnite, but his most important contribution to the world of gaming is more fundamental. As a child Sweeney taught himself to code so he could create the games he dreamed of, and as an adult he’s helping others do the same through his Unreal Engine, which powers half of all modern video games.
