We believe there’s a superhero in each of us. True Superheroes celebrates people who’ve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. Each week we nominate people in different fields. This week we focus on technology!

Bill Gates

Bill Gates went from being a victim of classroom bullies to the richest man on Earth, spearheading a computer revolution that changed the way society operated, but that was only the beginning. Since shifting his focus from operating systems to philanthropy he’s achieved more change than he ever did at Microsoft, channeling billions of dollars into projects and research that have saved countless lives and may even save the planet.

Dean Kamen

As a child, Dean Kamen struggled with dyslexia and a lack of interest in academic subjects. He was more concerned with practical matters, and by the time he left high school his inventions meant he was earning more than his parents. He now has more than 1,000 patents to his name including his most famous creation, the Segway, but he’s less well-known for his incredible tools that help people with severe physical disabilities, from high precision robotic limbs to extraordinary wheelchairs that can climb stairs.

Katie Moussouris

Katie Moussouris’ first computer only came with one game. Her mother couldn’t afford to buy more so the eight-year-old Katie learned BASIC and wrote her own. As an adult, she's put those hacking skills to good use on everything from the Human Genome Project to testing the Pentagon’s cyber defenses and is now using her resources to ensure that other women in the tech industry get a fair deal.
