We believe there’s a superhero in each of us. True Superheroes celebrates people who’ve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. Each week we nominate people in different fields. This week we focus on Nobel Prize winners!
Carolyn Bertozzi
As the first openly gay woman to win a Nobel prize, Carolyn’s importance as a role model is hard to overestimate, but it’s also dwarfed by her incredible contributions to medical science. Her research in the field of sugar chemistry has led to vital discoveries in the study of everything from breast cancer to Covid-19, and more than 50 patents. Not bad for someone who used to play in a band called Bored Of Education with Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello!
When the award-winning geneticist Sir Paul Nurse’s application for a US green card was rejected, he was confused. He was a Nobel laureate, the president of Rockefeller University, and a Knight of the British realm; what possible problem could there be in verifying his identity? The incredible answer was, in his own words, “like a Dickensian novel”, and without doubt one of the most fascinating and surprising personal stories in the history of the Nobel prize.

As a talented Jewish boy growing up in a small 1960s town Ben Bernanke was surrounded by racism and inequality, but thanks to an unlikely mentor - and an equally unlikely career as a construction worker - he was able to pay his way through Harvard. His study of the causes of the Great Depression not only led to a Nobel prize in Economics but would also prove invaluable when, as chairman of the Federal Reserve, he fought to protect the US from the worst impact of the 2007 global financial crisis.
