We believe there’s a superhero in each of us. True Superheroes celebrates people who’ve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. Each week we nominate people in different fields. This week we focus on Investigative Reporting.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas
As a boy growing up in a military barracks and witnessing countless human rights abuses, Anas knew that he had to become a reporter to expose injustice. His anonymity is equally essential due to the many death threats he receives, and goes far beyond the bead mask he always wears in public; as a reporter he’s disguised himself as a woman, a white man, and even a rock to get the story and carry out his objective of “naming, shaming and jailing.”
At just 10 years old Gloria Steinem found herself caring for her invalid mother, facing hardships that were always made worse by sexism. As an adult, she became one of the pioneers of feminism in an astonishing and improbable career as an investigative reporter, publisher, documentary maker, peace campaigner, and even a CIA operative. She’s done everything from undercover reporting as a Playboy Bunny to campaigning in the North Korean Demilitarized Zone and shows no signs of slowing down as she approaches her 90s.

The anonymous reporter “Antonio Salas” claims that he originally wanted to be a doctor but was too undisciplined so he chose to become a journalist instead. That lack of discipline was not obvious when he immersed himself in neo-Nazi and sex trafficking gangs in Spain, nor when he subsequently infiltrated the private circle of Carlos the Jackal, not only securing vital confessions from the notorious assassin but also shining a light on the shadowy connections that link the world of international terrorism.
