We believe thereâs a superhero in each of us - so weâre launching our annual True Superheroes awards to celebrate people whoâve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. Weâll nominate people in art, design, music, tech, sport and many other fields. This week we share a few of our many nominees from Hollywood.
Robert Downey Jr.
Itâs difficult to imagine Iron Man as a drug abuser with a prison record who canât get a job but thatâs exactly what happened to Robert Downey Jr. during the lowest period of his career in the late â90s. Heâs battled back from addiction and is now giving back - not just funding charities but channeling his inner Tony Stark to find tech solutions to solve environmental problems.
Once Millie Bobby Brown decided to become an actor at age eight nothing could stand in the Gen Z heroâs way, not even partial deafness. From her cult-hero role as Eleven on Stranger Things to becoming Unicefâs youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador, Millie, now 18, is taking on the world in 2022: âYoung people donât want to be talked about. We want to do the talking.â
From running the NYC marathon for Parkinsonâs disease to pledging $1m to help Ukrainian refugees, itâs fair to say Ryan Reynolds doesnât just play at being a superhero. Reynoldsâ daughters inspired him to open up about his coping strategies to deal with his âlifelong pal, anxietyâ: âWe don't talk enough about mental health and don't do enough to destigmatize talking about it.â So whatâs his solution?
