We believe there’s a superhero in each of us - so we’re launching our annual True Superheroes awards to celebrate people who’ve overcome adversity, made amazing contributions to society, and inspired others to do the same. We’ll nominate people in art, design, music, tech, sport and many other fields. This week we share a few of our many nominees in food.
Fire & Fieri
Food Network royalty Guy Fieri is the High King of middlebrow food. The inventor of ‘Donkey Sauce’ has no time for haters who sneer at his bodacious BBQ reviews. The Diners, Drive-ins and Dives host is too busy feeding California’s firefighters, helping America’s small restaurants stay afloat, and making Dragon’s Breath Chili.
You might know Jack Monroe as the British celebrity chef and blogger behind Cooking on a Bootstrap but she’s also a single mom who started an anti-poverty revolution from under her duvet. Fed up with spiraling costs, Jack fired off a series of Tweets that pressured supermarket giant Asda to put their low-priced value range back on the shelves. Along the way, Jack inspired a movement to end hunger.
Jamie Oliver is more than just a kitchen wizard. He’s one of the world’s bestselling authors and he's on a mission to save lives: “Diet-related disease is the biggest killer in America, but it’s just not glamorous or cool. There are no bullets or car chases.” Jamie’s planning to shake things up with a bit of spice.
