When Carlos first arrived in the US as a fresh-faced pitching prospect, he spoke no English and did not know how to ask for help. Isolated and lonely, he ate Domino’s Pizza every day because it was all he knew how to order. Fortunately, on the mound, his arm did all the talking and he was able to establish himself not just as one of the league’s most reliable pitchers but also one of its most dedicated philanthropists.
Making it to the big leagues is never easy, but for a woman it’s supposed to be impossible. Kelsie Whitmore is getting closer than any woman previously has, and is now hitting - and pitching - in the Atlantic League for the Staten Island FerryHawks. She’s the only female in an all-male league, but with an entire generation of girls drawing inspiration from her achievements, she may not be the only woman on the team for long.
