The infinite monkey puzzle 🙈🙉🙊

You‘ve no doubt heard the theory that a monkey, given a typewriter and infinite time, will eventually recreate the complete works of Shakespeare. Well, this infinite monkey has arrived, it’s called ChatGPT, and when prompted to write a Shakespearean couplet about the Infinite Monkey Theorem, it gave us this: 

Amidst the infinite realm of chance and fate,
The monkey types on, with odds we can't equate.

Worthy of the Bard! (Google Bard, that is).

Spotting the difference between the spoof Bards and the real thing is getting tricky. It’s becoming a major problem for publishers; top sci-fi magazine Clarkesworld was forced to stop accepting new submissions this week, due to a flood of AI-generated short stories, and research has shown that Amazon’s Kindle store already has hundreds of AI-written books for sale. 

It’s an even more thorny puzzle for educators, with debate raging over how best to respond to this new form of academic cheating - or even whether it counts as cheating at all. The University of Hong Kong is the latest to announce a ban on any AI use, while many US school districts have blocked ChatGPT on their networks and devices. Elsewhere, teachers are arguing that AI chatbots are no more of a problem in the classroom than calculators or laptops, and welcoming the new tech in the classroom. 

Those chatbot-savvy Kentucky fifth graders may be stealing a march on the rest of us because filtering out the AI-generated filler is not easy. Many websites and apps claim they can spot Silicon-based authors, but their success rates are often poor. If software can’t detect software, what hope is there for the rest of us? Perhaps the answers lie in the spiritual realm, where ChatGPT’s attempts at writing convincing sermons have failed to impress members of several faiths.
